Pharmacy First Training for January – ENDED

Pharmacy First Training CliniSkills Allied Health

CPLSC are very pleased to be announcing, that after extensive interest and background planning, we have managed to secure a total of SIX face to face training sessions across the month of January (16th, 17th & 21st) which include a combination of daytime, evening & weekends to help support your preparation across Lancashire & South Cumbria.

We will be hosting the practical events in conjunction with Community Pharmacists | CliniSkills and Allied Health Training – Training Across Professions (ahtraining.co.uk) to support contractors and all of our Community Pharmacists ahead of the exciting new Pharmacy First Service commencing on 31st January 2024

CliniSkills are the nationally commissioned provider for online clinical examination skills training for Community Pharmacists and have a dynamic and engaging online learning platform, as well as our planned face to face training with CliniSkills & Allied Health Training, that will equip you for your expanding role. It will provide you with the clinical examination skills you need to confidently assess common conditions, high risk presentations and red flags, as well as conduct hands on examination services such as ear, nose and throat and have a chance to speak to your peers around the new service.

Community Pharmacy Technician
Advancing your role.

This new NHS England fully funded training programme will help pharmacy technicians develop the skills and confidence to deliver effective clinical services in community pharmacy. This is to ensure that they have the right post-registration training to enable confident, safe working practices and career development.

Launching in September, up to 840 pharmacy technicians will be able to apply for the training.

Community Pharmacy Technicians – get ahead for Pharmacy First with NHS funded training. 

Whether you are a new pharmacy technician, returning to learning or looking for professional development to deliver more services, explore a range of training options for you. This includes: 

  • Advancing your role – build on your knowledge and skills delivering effective clinical services. A flexible training programme designed specifically for community pharmacy technicians, with optional peer support sessions included. 

 

  • Educational Supervisor Training – become an educational supervisor to help support, develop and upskill community pharmacy staff. This programme covers teaching styles, feedback, assessments and more.

England Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Programme 2025/26 Course Provision

All Foundation Trainee Pharmacists (FTP) entering the programme in 2025 will have access to a core training offer provided by NHS England. After extensive stakeholder engagement across all sectors of practice via a series of workshops, it was determined that the NHS England offer should focus on supporting delivery of the learning outcomes in practice.

The full specification is still subject to further development, but we can announce that this provision will cover the following:

  • Induction Day to orientate trainees to the programme
  • Establishment of communities of practice for trainees, to provide additional support to develop their prescribing practice (currently under exploration)
  • Online learning materials to support delivery of the Learning Outcomes
  • First Aid training

As this national offer applies to trainees across all sectors of practice, it should be noted that it does not include training related to site-specific service provision.

Therefore, it is expected that any training provision related to the specific needs of individual organisations or employers will continue to be provided by them, to ensure that trainee pharmacists offer safe and effective patient care.

Further updates and details of the 2025/26 offer, which will be called the NHS England FTP Training Provision, will be provided in due course.

Agilio – Pharmacy First – Free e-learning for pharmacists from NICE CKS authors

To support the rollout of the NHS Pharmacy First Service, Agilio has developed 7 free e-learning courses available on their iLearn platform for these common conditions. These accredited courses are based on NICE CKS and aligned to the NHS England clinical pathways and PGDs. All these courses are free to access and include a case study and multiple-choice questions to test understanding, with a certificate of completion.

Virtual Outcomes

Virtual Outcomes provides an on-line training solution to support you and your teams as part of our on-going programme of training. This is fully funded by CPL, so access is available to ALL our pharmacies.

The modules are aimed at Counter Staff and Health Champions, but may be enjoyed by the whole team, to ensure the best outcomes for your Patients.

There will be a different module released into the training library on the 1st of each month; all modules will remain in the library for you to access. These modules can be accessed at work or at home via a PC, tablet or mobile devices, for your convenience. All your teams need to access the training is your Pharmacies F Code.

Each module takes 15-20 minutes, with a test at the end to check your knowledge, and the facility to download a Certificate of Completion – great for your Healthy Living Pharmacy Portfolio and/or GPhC file as evidence of continued staff training.

VirtualOutcomes Online Support to Implement the New Pharmacy Contact

Following the announcement about the new five year community pharmacy contract, VirtualOutcomes has produced an overview of the support they will offer pharmacy to deliver the various different aspects of it.

CPPE – NorthWest

CPPE decided in March 2020 to postpone all face to face events. They are now offering workshops online via the zoom platform. The online workshops offer the same range of activities, group discussion, small group learning & networking as the face to face workshops but in the comfort of your own space.

Two new workshops  are starting in the Summer, Type 2 Diabetes: supporting people better and Health inequalities: focus on vaccine hesitancy.

CPPE also have some new programmes available including, Controlled drugs in Chronic pain: supporting patients with safe and effective use e-learning and Pharmacy technicians: enhancing your professional practice e-course.

Some of the new programmes have been developed for other sectors but may still be of interest.

There are many dates available to book and the online format is not only proving convenient but also an opportunity to speak to peers working in other parts of the country to share practice.

Newly Qualified Pharmacist programme  

Are you or do you work with a newly qualified pharmacist? 

This year CPPE is continuing to support newly qualified pharmacists this includes pharmacists working in community pharmacy. 

For newly qualified community pharmacist’s working in an independent pharmacy or a multiple without their own early years training programme or as a locum, CPPE in conjunction with HEE have created the Newly qualified pharmacists programme. 

The CPPE programme is a fully-funded, twelve-month programme for newly qualified pharmacists who completed pre-registration training in the 2020/21 cohort. 

The overall aim of the Newly qualified pharmacist programme is to support pharmacists to develop, and demonstrate, confidence and competence in core areas of community pharmacy practice. The programme is designed to support newly qualified pharmacists to become better equipped to adapt and deliver safe and effective patient care at this pivotal stage of their career. 

The programme takes a blended learning approach and offers a comprehensive mix of online learning activities, workshops, assessment and work-based support. Each pharmacist will be allocated a designated CPPE education supervisor, who will review their progress in practice and provide feedback and support.  The programme introduces newly qualified pharmacists to the fundamentals of being a successful and competent pharmacist through a series of online learning modules, self-reflection, assessments, and education supervisor support.

The Newly qualified pharmacist programme supports pharmacists to become better equipped to deliver safe and effective patient care, and provides comprehensive learning to support their springboard towards Independent Prescribing (IP) training. 

Two cohorts are available. 

Cohort 1 applications close 7th November, start date 1st November 

Cohort 2 application close 6th February, start date 31st January

Community Pharmacist consultation service
CPPE has developed a range of learning resources for pharmacists to provide the CPCS, including a self-assessment framework which helps you to identify gaps in your knowledge.
They have now introduced the NHS Community Pharmacist Consultation Service: essential skills programme.
The aim of the programme is to support pharmacists to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to undertake effective consultations, communications and clinical assessments in order to provide the NHS CPCS.

The programme includes an e-course of approximately 10-12 hours learning and a half day workshop.
Workshops are available for booking with dates from October 2020 to March 2021.

Foundation pharmacists programme 2020/2021

Health Education England (HEE) has provided funding for CPPE to deliver the Foundation pharmacist programme 2020/21 to support the 2019/20 cohort of pre-registration pharmacists.
This 12 month programme, mapped to the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Foundation Pharmacist Framework 2019, the programme is designed to support learners to develop the necessary knowledge, skills, behaviours, abilities, values, attitudes, beliefs and experience to deliver excellent patient care. The programme offers support from a CPPE education supervisor and on completion of the programme the pharmacy professional will be issued with a Statement of Assessment and Progression.

Provisionally registered pharmacists (PRPs) who work in community pharmacy are eligible for the Foundation pharmacist programme 2020/21 unless their employer provides a foundation training programme.

PSNC Regulatory Changes Webinar

Gordon Hockey, Director of Legal, will be hosting a PSNC webinar about upcoming changes to the Pharmaceutical Regulations on Tuesday 16th May at 7pm.

The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and NHS England has introduced a package of regulatory changes in response to the current pressures on community pharmacy, and calls from PSNC for regulatory easements to help contractors to manage the workforce and cost pressures. While the package is an inadequate response to the pressures and one aspect is divisive (and they were opposed by PSNC), some of the changes have some merit and may assist contractors.

PSNC’s webinar will cover the regulatory changes due to come into force from 25th May 2023. Gordon will outline the flexibilities for contractors to close for rest breaks and the provisions against which Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) may agree local hours plans. He will also look at business continuity plans to deal with temporary closures, and review the options for 100-hour pharmacies to reduce their core hours.

Community Pharmacy Lancashire AGM 2021

The 2022 Community Pharmacy Lancashire AGM was held on Tuesday 19th September 2022 at Preston Biz Space

A copy of the audited accounts 2020/21 can be downloaded here. A simple majority was required for the accounts to be accepted. Votes for (including postal votes) was 116, votes against 0, no abstentions.  The vote to accept the accounts was carried unanimously.

The AGM was followed by a presentations from James Wood PSNC Director of Contractor & LPC Support and Fin McCaul PSNC North West Regional Representative who gave updates on the 2021/22 (Year Three) CPCF agreement and The Future of Representation & Support. Community Pharmacy Lancashire SGM 2021

On 14th September 2021 a special meeting of contractors was held to amend the LPC Constitution to allow the Committee to delay the elections for LPC membership by one year. Members Term of Office was due to expire on 31st March 2022. However, proposals for change about the future model of local and national contractor representation and support, are likely to be put to a contractor vote within the year. For this reason, the Committee considered that the elections should be delayed until 2023 when the new model of support has been determined by the sector. To achieve this, it was proposed to amend the Constitution of the Lancashire LPC as follows:
Existing Clause – 13. Term of Office
• Subject to paragraphs 14 and 16, members of the Committee shall hold office from 1 April in the year of the election or appointment for a period of 4 years.
New Clause – 13. Term of Office
• Subject to paragraphs 14 and 16, members of the Committee shall hold office from 1 April in the year of the election or appointment for a period of 4 years. [Except that the term of office starting on 1 April 2018 shall be postponed until 1 April 2023 and current LPC members shall hold office for a period of 5 years.]
The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss and ask questions prior to voting on the changes. 
A two thirds majority was required for the proposal to be accepted. Votes for (including postal votes) was 115, votes against 1, no abstentions. Motion was carried

Training was held at Preston Grasshoppers Rugby Club to support the newly appointed PCN leads.

PCN Formation Events. January 2020

Five hosted PCN Formation Events were held across the five key geographies during the first two weeks of January. The events enabled those involved to come together for final, face to face discussions and confirm their PCN group, lead, complete the relevant documentation and register with CPL.

In addition there was a CPD session from Lynette Roberts about transitioning from working as competitors to collaborators

PCN Formation and CPCS Update Meeting. December 2019

A PCN Formation meeting attended by over 200 pharmacy professionals from across Lancashire, Blackpool and Blackburn and Darwen was held at which updates to relevant documentation were given. Face to face group discussions were facilitated, PCN group communication platforms were shared and assistance given with queries.

In addition there was a review session on the Community Pharmacy Consultation Service (CPCS) supporting implementation of the new service to help maximise patient care and service revenues.

The General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR), Revalidation, & the Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD). April 2018

EGM –  Formation of a Company Limited by Guarantee. September 2015

Community Pharmacy Lancashire held a special meeting of contractors Wednesday 2nd September 2015 to propose the formation of a company limited by guarantee.

Background
The healthcare purchasing (commissioning) climate has changed enormously in the last few years. More organisations could use pharmacies to provide services but there is now competition for what we have historically regarded as “community pharmacy only services”. Services are being put out to tender, by CCGs and Local Authorities, rather than being directly commissioned from community pharmacy, e.g. historically by a PCT. Community Pharmacy Lancashire being a representative committee is not permitted to bid for these. The new Company would be able to bid for tenders and services to ensure that community pharmacies do not lose out on the potential to deliver existing and new services.

In consultation with PSNC, Community Pharmacy Lancashire support the setting up of a Company Limited by Guarantee to act on behalf of all Pharmacy Contractors in the Lancashire Area. A company limited by guarantee is often used for establishing charities, clubs, societies, community projects and other such organisations. One of the reasons to opt for establishing a Company Limited by Guarantee is that it protects those running the company from personal liability, for example the company’s debts. Funding for the company may be initially generated by having a joining fee and in due course from any tender that it is successful in bidding for.

Voting results

Prior to the meeting, 46 postal votes accepting the changes had been received. There were no postal votes rejecting the changes. A further 167 votes in favour were recorded at the meeting with no votes rejecting the proposals and no abstentions. The proposal was therefore carried.

EGM – Amending the LPC Constitution. February 2015

Community Pharmacy Lancashire held a special meeting of contractors Thursday 5th February 2015 to consider proposals for changes to the LPC constitution and vote on these changes.

Prior to the meeting, 114 postal votes accepting the changes had been received. There were no postal votes rejecting the changes. A further 49 votes in favour were recorded at the meeting with no votes rejecting the proposals. Therefore, in accordance with clause 19.5 of the constitution (Any amendment to the constitution must be carried by a two-thirds majority of the total votes cast), the amended constitution was formally adopted. Prescription Pricing What Really Happens? May 2014

Eighty pharmacists and their staff listened to members of NHS Prescription Services (Prescription Pricing Team) explain the process and pitfalls of prescription pricing.
